Number Concept Activities - Grade 1

Pictures, Numbers and Words

Purpose:

• To have children associate number words and numerals with pictorial representations of quantities.

Materials:

• Worksheet
• Pencils
• Counters such as colored chips or cubes.

1. Review the numbers from 1 to 10. For example, you can review these numbers by:
    
   • Showing children a set of colored cubes and asking them to identify the number of cubes in the set.
   • Showing children a numeral or number word and asking them to make a set with that number of cubes in it.
   • Asking children to make a set of  9 colored cubes, a set of 4 colored cubes, etc.
   • Having children rote count to 10.
      
2. Tell children that they will be doing an activity that involves the numbers from 1 to10.
3. Distribute the worksheet and discuss the directions for completing it:
    
   • Count the number of objects in each picture.
   • Print the numeral (symbol) for the number in the box below the picture.
   • Print the number word on the lines below the box for the numeral.
      
4. Have children complete the worksheet.
